McCain Is an Idiot

I know, I can hear the "duh!" all the way through the Internets. But something happened today that goes beyond his normal idiocy. Speaking in Jordan, next to ex-Dem turncoat Joementum Lieberman, McCain made the astonishing statement that Al Qaeda operatives in Iraq had been slipping across the border into Iran for training and then slipping back to prey on Americans.

Good theory. Just one problem. Al Qaeda is Sunni and Iran is Shia. There probably doesn't seem like there's much of a difference to Grampaw "I Hate Gooks" McCain, but when even someone like Lieberman has to step in and correct you, then there's something missing in the old gray matter.

And McCain, let me remind you, is daring to run on his "experience" in international affairs and his abilities in the international arena.

As Olbermann said tonight, he thinks we'll be in Iraq for 100 years because that's how long it will take him to get it straight.

Hey Farns, how does your toes taste?

It was the 12th attack this year inside Kurdish Iraq by Ansar al-Islam, an al-Qaeda-linked radical group that the U.S. military routed four years ago in the first days of the war. The Kurds say the late-March attack was another sign that Iran is supporting the militants and feeding the war in Iraq. An attack in July, also blamed on Ansar, killed a Kurdish border policeman... "From time to time Iran uses them [Ansar al-Islam fighters] as a pressure card to make trouble for us," said Salam Omer Ibrahim, mayor of the Iraqi border city of Said Sadiq. "They're saying, 'If you help our opposition, we have ways to respond.' "

But this covert proxy conflict has resulted in the deaths of dozens of American soldiers, killed by powerful projectile bombs that U.S. authorities say came from Iran. Insurgents using Iranian weapons also have been blamed for the deaths of six Kurdish border guards and uncounted other Iraqis.

Kurdish guerrillas, meanwhile, told a National Public Radio correspondent recently that they have killed scores of Iranians and shot down an Iranian helicopter in combat operations inside Kurdish Iraq. (Iran said it had a helicopter crash because of engine trouble.)

Here's Clinton's federal indictment following the August 1998 embassy bombings: "USAMA BIN LADEN, the defendant, and al Qaeda also forged alliances with the National Islamic Front in the Sudan and with representatives of the government of Iran, and its associated terrorist group Hizballah, for the purpose of working together against their perceived common enemies in the West, particularly the United States."
