A Gathering of Eagles?

Word on the street has it that a gang of veterans calling itself a Gathering of Eagles is going to show up at the Vietnam memorial on March 17, the day of the 2007 March on the Pentagon. Wearing armbands.

Their stated purpose is allegedly to keep the likes of Cindy Sheehan and Jane Fonda from spitting on Iraq veterans again and throwing paint on the Vietnam memorial. This "story" is all over the wingnut Internets, including a blog calling itself ProgressiveU(!). Take a look and tell me what is so fucking progressive about this Faux-News-watching Rethug-sucking talking-points-spouting Kool-aid-drinking knuckle-dragging asshole.

Okay, enough name-calling. Back to the point: We've all beaten the whole "spitting on veterans" meme to death on this blog already, but throwing paint on the Vietnam memorial? That's a new one on me.

I don't believe that it has ever happened -- there was red paint (symbolizing blood) poured on the steps of the capitol building as I recall during the last demonstration, and back during the Vietnam War protests, actual blood was poured on occasion -- see for example, the Berrigan Brothers pouring blood on the draft records in Baltimore. But as far as I know, the Vietnam memorial has not been splattered with anything.

So my question is this: Can anyone seriously picture Cindy Sheehan, of all people, (or even Jane Fonda, for that matter) actually spitting on an Iraq veteran? Throwing red paint on the Vietnam memorial?

The answer is no, no rational person believes that. So just where are these bogus threats coming from?

From the diseased, weak-minded and insane imaginations of that good ole vast wingnut conspiracy, of course. And from the thinking-impaired socially-retarded shrunken-head brains of a bunch of can't-get-over-it Vietnam vets who still blame Jane Fonda for losing the Vietnam War. Never mind that inconvenient and pesky fact that 99% of the Hanoi Jane stories are PROVEN to be false. In short, they are lies that are still being circulated by the rightwing We-Hate-Jane crowd.

But back to the gathering storm of eagles. I think these self-described "eagles" actually just want to show up and strut around in their armbands and jackboots to intimidate people, kind of like a bunch of other guys I can think of, who also were notorious for suppressing free speech and calling anyone who disagreed with The Leader a traitor...

Gathering of eagles? Uh-huh. More like a Konvocation of Kleagles.

We will hate Jane long after we have made IRAQ pay for 9-11.

I still can not imagine people actually treating Veterans that way. It is not their fault. Spit and throw paint on politicians

The article I read stated the group was the Rolling Thunder group. If I'm not mistaken, these are the same guys who were/are traveling to troops' funerals to protect the families from that wingnut Westboro church group from out in the heartland.

Personally, I think they're tied to the group who attacked Kerry's service last election, and are simply trying to get a jumpstart on doing the same prior to the primaries.

"Perceiving the modern militant homosexual movement to pose a clear and present danger to the survival of America, exposing our nation to the wrath of God as in 1898 B.C. at Sodom and Gomorrah, WBC has conducted over 32,000 such demonstrations since June, 1991, at homosexual parades and other events, including funerals of impenitent sodomites (like Matthew Shepard) and over 200 military funerals of troops whom God has killed in Iraq/Afghanistan in righteous judgment against an evil nation. "America crossed the line on June 26, 2003, when the Supreme Court (the conscience of the nation) ruled that we must respect sodomy. WBC teams have picketed all over the United States, and internationally (including Canada, Jordan and Iraq). The unique picketing ministry of Westboro Baptist Church has received international attention, and WBC believes this gospel message to be this world's last hope."

Speaking of wingnuts...LOL.

I checked out a number of Veterans groups that will be attending. On the whole it seems to me that their intentions are worthy, they don't want antiwar demonstrators in the Wall area,I can respect that. All this shit brings up the 60's 'antiwar' nightmares for me, Jane Fonda included. ANSWER also represents the Socialist Workers Party, who I hated in college more than Jane Fonda, and I don't hate Jane Fonda....yet!

Sounds like this gang is just lookin' for a fight ... even if it's against imaginary villains.

Does anyone know if they'll be wearing brown shirts and the armbands are black, red, and white? Do they hang out at a place called "The Eagle's Nest"?

Sorry Farnsworth, I'm carrying that innuendo too far, but these nut bars are just too much.

Peace,
Fiona

Well 'Freethinker' if the gang you are referring to are the Biker Vets there would be no fight, only 'Apocalypse Now'....LOL.

Look, for many Combat Vets this demonstration is rubbing salt into 'old wounds, myself included. The problem is not 'A.N.S.W.E.R' or the 'Biker Vet's'. But those bastards that planned out this phony war for WMD in Iraq; when to any rational being, OSB & Co. is the 'clear and present danger',this country needs to face with all our attention. Well, who fucked the pooch here? Answer, the goons in power. Who is going to suffer? The Afgan/Iraq Vets, I've seen this movie before, nearly 40 years ago and it still hurts me.

Freethinker, I read your 'Blog' bio, you seem to tout yourself as a neighborly guy. Why not visit your local VA Hospital and meet these guys who have been doing the fighting and dying. Talk to them about the struggles they face, music, or any fucking thing. Just talk to them as human beings. Let us know how it effects your thinking.

Sorry if I may have offended you or anyone else, that wasn't my intention. I understand how you feel (don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I "know" how you feel, how could I).

I just don't see how anyone could possibly believe that these protesters have any intention of demeening anyone or anything. "We will protect the Vietnam Memorial. If they try to deface it, there will be some violence, I guarantee you."

A Gold Star mom? I don't think so.

Fiona,
No problem here. Farnsworth's Cassandra complex would have everyone believe Reichfuehrer SS Himmler was of the leading the pack of Bikers....LOL

I believe that 1% of either group could attempt a confrontation. But many of us Vets consider the 'Wall' and it's environs Sacred Ground. Many of the 'real deal' Vets do not want, or going to stand for, street theatre by either party on or near the 'Wall'.

While I agree with everyone that we have the right to protest and to organize a march, I also believe that as American citizens, we also all have the responsibility to support our country and to support our troops, especially when our country is at war.

In the days of our founding fathers, to do otherwise would have been considered an act of treason. For many of us, it still is just that.

That is why 1,000's and 1,000's of veterans and civilians who support our vets, will also be 'near' the wall on March 17th. But we will be there to respect and honor the faces behind the names on the wall, not spit on them as your drugged-out hippie parents did in the '60's.

We will be there also to let the country and the world know, that you do not speak for all of us.

You never have and you never will.

Your calls for action and your pleas for donations sound a like like the followers of Jimmy Jones. The makers of Kool-Aid endorsing your march?

BTW, followers of Jihad Jane defaced the Vietnam Memorial in my hometown.

Moldraker:
Really? Please cite a reliable news source for the alleged defacement by the "followers of Jihad Jane" (whatever that means).
Nobody spit on you or any veteran you might know, and certainly not my "drugged out hippie parents": They were both born before 1920...
So I can only assume that I am the "drugged out hippie" you're speaking about.
In case you missed it in the masthead, I was in Vietnam, Moldraker, and I think I've earned the right to criticize my government. Especially when it is in the wrong.
To do otherwise would be treason.
Thousands and thousands? Okay, we'll see about that. If you are wrong and there are not "thousands and thousands" of veterans "protecting" the wall, will you come back here and eat some crow?
I didn't think so.
So fuck off.

For those of you who didn't get UH1Charlie's reference to the Cassandra Complex, here's a link to the Wikipedia article.
Note that in the legend, Cassandra was always right, but no one believed her.
Thanks, Charlie, for agreeing that I am right... (LOL back atcha!)

Like there are a group of Americans who believe in peace that have the sick twisted mind required to and enough courage to attack or defile anyone or anything.

PEACE protesters?

Seems to me its a chance for some brothers to pose and intimidate.

If anyone is going to mar the Wall it'll be the same COINTELPRO agents we had to deal with in the 60's.

People are tired of the killing they don't want to degrade the dead.

Hell bro, I was there when the Wall was dedicated. There were petitions every where calling it a "slit in the ground" and disrespectful.

I'm glad those brothers have changed their minds but there's more to rewritting history than wifes tales of preggie hippy chicks with saliva on their chins.

"The Man" is loosing more support for this fiasco every day. In 69 1,300 GI's bought an ad in the NYT calling for an end to our war.

In 2007 over 1600 active duty have signed a call for Congress to end the war. Are nam vets worried these brothers and sisters are going to spit on the Wall?

Its all bs bro. The anti war peeps dont hate GI's. We want to bring them home.

Peace Vet,
11Bravo OOHRA! 'Crusaders' out of Tay Ninh, 'Rat Pack' Gun Platoon.

I don't see where we disagree here. But you would have to at least acknowledge that the lunatic fringe on both sides will be attending. The marchers have already announced that there will be acts resulting in arrest. So they are spoiling for a fight, as well. As far as what the 'spooks' are going to do is anyone's guess. Same shit different day.

FYI, I joined VVAW in Boston before anyone heard of Kerry, but I had trouble relating to human beings; so I sat on the sidelines and photo documented all the 'street theater'....LOL. But my 'Peace' stance brought a world of shit down on me, that I don't care to relate in this forum.

Thanks for writing Bro,
