In 2008, when I went back to Vietnam, I bought a copy of The Sorrow of War by former North Vietnam soldier Bao Ninh.
You can read my full review of the book here. But suffice it to say that I called it an astonishingly honest and brutal depiction of the tragedy of a North Vietnam soldier desensitized to his own humanity after ten years at war. I also called it the All Quiet on the Western Front of the Vietnam War.
I've seen no reason since then to change my opinion. It's still a "must read".
